Tottenham Hotspur have been one of the more active teams in the January transfer window this year, having sold Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace before landing a sizeable fish in former Crystal Palace and Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for a cool 40 million euros.

The Gallagher signing was made by Spurs to bring in some leadership into a squad clearly lacking that, though Spurs remain in turmoil with a sea of successive poor results in the Premier League under embattled manager Thomas Frank.

Well, Gallagher is not the only Premier League veteran Spurs are trying to acquire. Tottenham are in intense negotiations with defending league champions Liverpool for veteran left back Andrew Robertson, hoping to sign the Scottish international for a few million pounds as new left back cover for the oft injured Destiny Udogie.

Tottenham have no options at LB

Tottenham recently lost veteran Ben Davies to a seemingly serious injury a couple of weeks ago, and now Paul O Keefe confirms that the Welsh left back will need more surgery done on his ankle. Per O Keefe, this likely means Davies's career with Tottenham is done after 12 seasons.

Davies actually exceeded expectations this season when he did play. Spurs did not use Davies until later in the campaign, replacing Djed Spence for him as the main Udogie backup. And Davies actually outplayed Spence up until the point of his injury.

Tottenham Hotspur signed the young Souza to play left back, but the Davies injury means that Souza would be the only cover for Udogie. And seeing how Udogie has already missed several games this season with multiple injuries, Tottenham could not trust the raw Brazilian prospect as their only backup left back to the Italian international.

Spence is clearly better off in other positions than left back. So with one key veteran presence down in Ben Davies, the high interest in Andrew Robertson now makes a ton of sense. Robertson will come with big wages that outdo the fact that his transfer fee will be minimal, but it is better to have a warm body with Premier League (and Champions League) winning experience than nobody at all behind Udogie besides Souza and Spence.

The rough injury news to Davies is sad confirmation that this is the end for a valuable club servant, just when he actually had a deal on the table from Nice in France. Robertson is now an obvious transfer target for Spurs in light of this confirmation on Davies - not that Spurs fans were not already suspecting the issue here.
