Tottenham Hotspur left back Souza has all the potential in the world to become a top left back, and in Brazil, he is their great hope to follow in the foot steps of Marcelo and Roberto Carlos as the next great left back for the national team at a time when Brazil don't really have any credible fullbacks.
Although Souza sparkled in his brief minutes last season upon joining in the winter transfer window from Palmeiras, it's clear that he needs significantly more seasoning before he can threaten for starting minutes at the Premier League Big Six level.
The prevailing belief this summer has been that Souza will go out on loan, with clubs as big as FC Porto interested in his services. But those rumors have cooled recently, and after the Djed Spence sale to Serie A giants Inter Milan, Souza suddenly has a path to playing time.
Souza remains one to watch this summer
Tottenham Hotspur supporters are all wondering what Roberto De Zerbi's plans are for the talented Souza and if he does see a role for him in the squad already in 2026/26 - and if that role is worth him not getting sufficient minutes to develop early in his career.
Souza's development needs to be a priority, because Tottenham did spend a fair chunk of change on a player who legitimately does have world class potential at a scarce position. And already on the ball, it's easy to tell that he is special and can be the next great offensive fullback.
The question is, do Tottenham need him now? Andy Robertson has looked sharp towards the end of the preseason and is a Premier League legend, but he's also well above 30. And starter Destiny Udogie still doesn't appear to be match fit after endless injuries in the 2025/26 season. Meanwhile, there isn't a single healthy right back behind Pedro Porro, to the point where Archie Gray has been utilized as the backup this summer.
Tottenham are going to need to clarify Souza's future, but it is curious to see if De Zerbi likes Souza's technical quality enough to invert him as the backup option at right back. And Souza's future for the 2026/27 Premier League season may also rest on just how healthy the medical staff thinks Destiny Udogie is and how much Spurs can rely on the former Udinese man this season. Souza is in a bit of flux, but, either way, he is going to have a story to tell this season, whether in North London or abroad.
