Tottenham Hotspur surprised everyone the day before the close of the summer transfer window, securing Mykhaylo Mudryk on loan from Chelsea, as well as signing their backup center back Tosin Adarabioyo permanently for seven million pounds.
What makes the deals frustrating are not just that Adarabioyo and Mudryk are subpar players, but it's also the players Spurs could have had instead. Tosin will be the replacement for Kevin Danso, who is really digging his heels in for a move away from Spurs with Sunderland interested, frustratingly taking the opposite stance of the player Roberto De Zerbi actually wanted out, Richarlison.
Meanwhile, Richy blocking a reunion with Everton has stopped Tottenham from being able to sign Iliman Ndiaye, whose 60 million pound transfer from the Merseyside was already signed, sealed, and delivered pending Richy - and now Everton are signing old Spurs striker target Folarin Balogun, another better player than the Brazilian international, instead.
Tottenham are doing Chelsea a huge favor
Compounding all of the negativity of these two signings is the fact that Tottenham Hotspur are directly doing a favor to one of their biggest rivals in Chelsea. The Blues have been wanting to sell Mykhaylo Mudryk and Tosin Adarabioyo for at least a year now, as neither of them have been remotely good enough to be in the squad.
Tottenham are paying wages to Mudryk and Tosin to be backups in their team and potentially play significant minutes over the course of the season when Chelsea were so desperate to get rid of both players that literally nobody else was interested.
The Tosin and Mudryk deals are not disasters by themselves, because there is some theoretical universe in which they could be good for Roberto De Zerbi and Tottenham Hotspur, whlie they are both pretty cheap players between Mudryk's loan and Tosin costing only seven million pounds.
However, Tottenham are trying to be a top five team in the Premier League, and while Chelsea finished higher than Spurs last season, they weren't a European level team in the standings either. So Spurs are signing scraps from a team that did not even make it to Europe and wanted nothing to do with these players.
Tottenham are taking wages and roster space off the books for Chelsea that they can use on better players, and doing that favor for a direct rival is perhaps what sours Tottenham fans on Mudryk and Tosin more than anything else at this point.
