Tottenham Hotspur have had a mixed bag of a January transfer window thus far. Beyond the usual loan maneuvering, including sending Manor Solomon from Villarreal to Fiorentina, they have made some bold moves. Spurs signed Conor Gallagher for 40 million euros from Atletico Madrid ahead of interest from Aston Villa, they brought in left back Souza from Brazilian club Santos, and they sold Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace for 35 million pounds. And that is not even mentioning Fabio Paratici leaving for the Viola or Thomas Frank facing a sacking.
And now, Tottenham are prepared to make one more big splash in the winter transfer window - and hopefully it is not the last one. Spurs are gunning hard after iconic Liverpool left back Andrew Robertson, who has become expendable at Anfield with new signing Milos Kerkez starting to come into his own as a top player for the club.
Robertson is 31 years old and on his last legs in the Premier League, with many declaring him finished after a rough 2024/25 season in which he was the only weak link on a title winning squad. Now, Robertson has done enough in 2025/26 to show that maybe he is not completely finished at all, but he is clearly nothing more than a stop gap solution for Spurs.
Tottenham are looking for a stop gap
But a stop gap is likely all that Tottenham Hotspur are looking for. Destiny Udogie is their only clear option at left back, and while he is fantastic, as his return against Borussia Dortmund showed, he is too injury prone to fully trust. Souza just came in this January, but the teenager is far too raw and unproven to trust. Djed Spence has been an unmitigated disaster at left back, while Ben Davies is now headed for retirement after a season ending ankle injury.
So Robertson it is. Tottenham value his veteran leadership, Premier League experience, and two way ability as veteran cover for Udogie (and potentially Souza). Although there are definitely reasons to dislike the signing of Andrew Robertson, there is one reason to hate the deal a little bit less, even if you are among the skeptics.
According to a report from Paul Joyce of the Sunday Times, Tottenham are willing to pay three million pounds plus add ons for the veteran Liverpool left back this winter. Even though Robertson does have huge wages, for a half season, those wages would also only amount to a few million pounds. So for less than 10 million pounds total, Spurs are going for a veteran left back who could start some games at a higher level than what they have, minus Udogie.
It is not a terrible signing from a financial perspective. A few million pounds for a player who is, at worst, better than Spence and, at best, as good as Udogie. That is a huge swing, but if Robertson is half as good as he was in his prime, he's still worth the money for sure, and if he is only as good as he was last season, that is still better than Spence at left back.
