Don't let Mykhaylo Mudryk distract you from Dejan Kulusevski

Tottenham Hotspur turned plenty of heads when they decided to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk from Chelea on loan, and even though the move actually carries no real long term risk as a loan deal, because Spurs could have signed better players who have actually played football in the last two years and are not simply pet favorites of Roberto De Zerbi, the move has caught a lot of flack.

But while there are valid criticisms to be had about Mudryk, at the end of the day, he is a low risk, high reward left wing flier with a lot of explosiveness. And if anyone can get Mudryk to play at his best level - the level he flashed as a prospect under his tutelage at Shakhtar Donetsk - then it is De Zerbi.

As controversial as the Mudryk signing is and as much as it will continue to be debated and dissected by those in and out of Tottenham, the real move that needs to be discussed the most is the return of Dejan Kulusevski to full training.

Don't write off Dejan Kulusevski

Kulusevski is coming off a devastating knee injury that many wondered could be career threatening. But he is back practicing now and is inching close to a return. Nobody really knows when that will be, but if Kulu is practicing fully with his teammates, it may honestly be a matter of weeks or months at most unti the Swedish international is taking his first minutes on that pitch for Tottenham Hotspur.

Although Mykhaylo Mudryk is exciting and splashy with his pace and strength, Kulusevski is a more cerebral player who can progress play, be a leader, and make those around him better creatively. He can even score a few goals, too, which Tottenham need.

Starts may be difficult to come by with Omar Marmoush and Savio joining the Tottenham attack, and Kulusevski has not yet gotten a chance to play with Mohammed Kudus after he missed the entire 2025/26 Premier League season.

But Kulusevski deserves to be talked about a lot more, especially by the media outside of London. Kulusevski, even after a huge knee injury, is still expected to be a huge asset to Tottenham, not just because of the intangibles, but because a lot of what made him so great in the past, even when he was Serie A's biggest prospect on Juventus's books, was mental and technical - the sort of things that don't deteroriate and often get better after a big injury like this one.
