Tottenham Hotspur made a controversial move this summer transfer window when they sold Djed Spence to Serie A champions Inter Milan, and while many Spurs fans were upset with the move, especially since Spurs did not sign an actual right back to play behind star man Pedro Porro, the truth is that the Lilywhites were painted into a corner.
And that's because after boosting his stock greatly with a top World Cup for the England national team, Spence wanted to leave to a club playing in the Champions League and thought he would have an easier time competing for starts at Inter after they sold Denzel Dumfries to Real Madrid, whereas he would never start for Spurs regularly behind Pedro Porro - the literal best right back of the 20w6 World Cup.
Well, so far, Spence has not been starting for Inter, and he has struggled for fitness. And already, he is falling behind the curve in the competitive England national team pecking order, even after being one of their standout defensive players this summer.
Djed Spence is falling out of favor at England
According to Tom Barclay of The Sun, Thomas Tuchel is not expected to call up Djed Spence for England's next international tour of duty, as Spence has not been playing enough for Inter Milan to be sharp enough to be called up. Tuchel will not be selecting an expanded squad, which means Spence won't get to sneak in as a bonus pick either.
Now, that does not mean Spence will be bypassed by Tuchel in the future if he plays well or if Tuchel remembers what he did at the World Cup and calls him up anyway even if he is not regularly starting games for the Nerazzurri.
However, Spence being left out of the next England squad would be a huge deal, if true, and it is a sign of a potential trend that could continue. The grass is not always greener, and even though Spence was just a backup to Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro at Tottenham Hotspur last season, he still got plenty of playing time because of the injuries to Udogie and would have gotten several starts this season with Porro still not fully fit after the World Cup.
Spence may already be regretting the move to Inter, because instead of his stock boosting, it is falling, to the point where even his biggest claim to fame of being a key player for England may be fading if this keeps up.
