Tottenham Hotspur have massive needs in the attack and midfield this summer transfer window after once again finishing a mere 17th in the Premier League - and even closer to relegation this time - but that has not stopped the Lilywhites from going after more players to bolster their defense.
After staying up in the Premier League and therefore confirming the additions of veteran free agent left back Andrew Robertson from Liverpool and Bournemouth's late blooming central defender Marcos Senesi, Tottenham are after a younger defender at the behest of Roberto De Zerbi.
Tottenham have submitted bids to Brighton for Jan Paul van Hecke, who has been on their transfer radar over the past year. Now, Tottenham insider @szyexcl is reporting that everyone involved in the deal thinks that a "deal will be struck" between Brighton, De Zerbi's former employers, and Tottenham on a transfer. Spurs reportedly bid just below the Brighton asking price of 50 million pounds, so it is only a matter of time until the Seagulls and Spurs come to terms on an agreement.
Tottenham are not done with defenders
Van Hecke is not yet in his prime at 25 years of age, and he could be an immediate starter for Spurs, though the team does have Micky van de Ven and now Marcos Senesi, too. Plus, Hamburg standout Luka Vuskovic is set to return from his loan to the Bundesliga, and despite his youthful years and inexperience, the Croatian international outplayed all these players - and also Tottenham captain Cristian Romero.
Senesi is expected to be something of a Romero replacement, so Spurs fans will wonder who Van Hecke will take minutes from. Micky van de Ven appears to be secure in his future while Romero is not, and Tottenham supporters will not want to see Vuskovic sold or lose his place after outperforming virtually every center back in European football last season.
The Jan Paul van Hecke transfer is clearly not a necessary one for Tottenham Hotspur at this point, which makes it even more evident that this is a move Roberto De Zerbi really wants and a move that both Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange are in full agreement about making.
Again, Spurs have been interested in Van Hecke for quite some time, and @szyexcl even said that the interest has been mutual. At a price of 50 million pounds, Van Hecke will be under a lot of pressure to perform, but if he plays like he did under De Zerbi, he is worth around that money.
