Tottenham Hotspur spent nearly 400 milion pounds on summer tranfer upgrades this year, bringing in two blockbuster midfielders and a few new faces in the attack, in addition to three well known Premier League defenders in an an effor to bolster the squad.
But it still feels like Spurs are coming up short on quality despite all the spending. They sit 20th in the Premier League table at the September international break, and while that would seem to cast doubt on the quality of the signings, the reality is that Spurs need more because, well, they DO need more. They finished 17th in the Premier League table in back to back seasons, and 400 million pounds just doesn't buy you what it used to in world football, especially if you want real quality that can compete for titles one day.
Tottenham still need goals. Omar Marmoush and Savio are real talents, but Savio was never a top scorer and Marmoush isn't a true No. 9, which Spurs are quickly finding out. And with Richarlison frozen out of the squad and Dominic Solanke continuing to play poorly, Spurs need at least one new striker.
Tottenham will be more active, just not now
Anyone thinking Tottenham Hotspur will have it easy in the January transfer window when it comes to signing new goal scorers or a backup right back to Pedro Porro may be disappointed, because in his latest transfer update, The Athletic's David Ornstein warns that Spurs will have to sell before buying.
Ornstein said, via Chris Cowlin, “They seem intent on continuing to try to improve the squad. Will that happen in January... it is not a good market at the best of times, and you saw a year ago, having re-taken control after Daniel Levy’s departure, it was just Conor Gallagher who came in and there was a departure of Brennan Johnson. He wasn’t replaced. It does not tend to be a busy window. But I don’t know of any concrete plans to hit the market hard again. January is tough. They did a lot in the summer, they will probably do a bit more next summer. And there’s the significant factor of players coming back from injury — the likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert; the returns of Mohammed Kudus and James Maddison are relatively recent. There’s not much squad space. So for players to come in, some will have to depart.”
While Tottenham fans will be happy to hear that the Lilywhites are planning on upgrading the squad, it will no doubt be disappointing to hear the biggest Premier League transfer insider say that Spurs don't have enough squad space for immediate upgrades in January and will be more active next summer. It could be another tough season for Spurs if the current players can't turn it around and if the injured returns aren't truly "like new signings".
