Tottenham Hotspur have made six signings this summer transfer window but have not made any big sales official yet besides Luka Vuskovic, who was out on loan to Hamburg last season. There are a few pieces who could be moving soon, though, as Tottenham are aggressively pushing to sell Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario, while Lucas Bergvall has submitted a transfer request and Inter Milan are trying to sway Djed Spence alongside Romero.

Spurs next focus after signing the 185 million pound midfield transfer pairing of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes is to upgrade the attack, but now with more midfielders coming in, it is time for Tottenham to sell the players who are not going to play and then use those funds to help sign a top attacking player.

Two of the midfielders Tottenham fans view as expendable right now, since Roberto De Zerbi probably is not going to sell Conor Gallagher months after signing him, are Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur. The latter did play an important role for De Zerbi in the relegation fight and surprisingly played well despite how horrible Uruguay were at the World Cup, but the former is already being courted by other Premier League clubs like Brentford, and whilee he is younger, he really has no role to play in the squad.

Tottenham may still value Sarr and Bentancur

So as Tottenham Hotspur supporters wait for hints about the possible transfers of Sarr or Bentancur or something of a stance from the club on these players, it seems like De Zerbi is planning for both of them and sees them as important.

When asked about their absences from the preseason tour, Roberto De Zerbi seemed to downplay the likelihood of that happening as a result of an impending transfer or a desire to keep them away from injury in order to have them sold this summer (which is what happened to Yves Bissouma last year, costing Spurs millions).

Instead, De Zerbi said that both midfielders are "crucial", via Hotspur Lane, “Bentancur is a crucial player for us, and Pape Sarr, the same. I spoke after the World Cup with players and for every one of them we take different ways. Bentancur asked me for one week more because he suffered a very tough season last season, and Pape Sarr has a personal problem, and he asked me for one week more. But nothing, no problem, nothing more than I said.”

So it seems like the two players just wanted an additional week off and will be back at it. De Zerbi is not saying that they are more likely to be sold, and he is praising them now for their importance. But that does not rule out a transfer either; it just means that this does not make them more likely to go. That being said, it does raise the possibility that both could stay as key depth pieces for De Zerbi, who may not want to thin out his midfield after how badly Spurs got crushed by injuries last season.
