Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero is 99 percent out the door this summer transfer window, and Roberto De Zerbi and the club are not even pretending like they want to keep him. Spurs already signed compatriot Marcos Senesi for free from Bournemouth, and then they went out and spent 60 million euros on another top Premier League ball playing centre back in De Zerbi's very own protege Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton.
Romero's antics at the end of the season in which he tried to bail out of supporting Spurs in their final game against Everton with relegation on the line sealed his fate, though his terrible performances at center back and preceived lack of effort had already doomed him in the eyes of most fans.
After such poor performances, Tottenham would have had to legitimately worry about getting the proper transfer value for Romero, who clearly wants to join the giants of La Liga. He was already openly flirting with Atletico Madrid, and both Real Madrid and Barcelona were whispered about.
Cristian Romero is going to make Spurs some real money now
Atleti and Barca are back in for Romero this summer, and now, thanks to the 2026 World Cup, the 2022 world champion with Argentina has fully rehabbed his transfer value and looks set to make Tottenham back the money they spent on Van Hecke.
Not only did Romero get credited with the critical goal to tie the game against Egypt 2-2 this time around, but he also played a monster game on the defense end. Cuti had three tackles, two interceptions, and four clearances, with only the impervious Manchester United man Lisandro Martinez shining brighter on that side of the pitch.
Meanwhile, Cristian Romero completed around 94 percent of his passes, with only exprienced center midfielders Leandro Paredes and Enzo Fernandez, a Real Madrid transfer target from Chelsea, completing more passes than the Tottenham Hotspur center back's 64.
Romero is almost guaranteed to go to La Liga now. Barcelona fans will want him more because he has done a lot to help Lionel Messi's legacy again, while Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone will be keenly watching what he has done for the Argentina national team this summer.
The only reason why Spurs did not sell to Atleti last summer was because Los Rojiblancos were not offering enough money. But now that he is shining at another World Cup and proving 2022 was no fluke, Spurs can extract what they need from the Spanish giants.
