Cristian Romero's latest achievement is another sign of a Tottenham exit

Tottenham Hotspur star center back Cristian Romero has taken one of the biggest reputation hits in the entire Premier League this season, going from rating as one of the best players in his position to someone Spurs may be souring on as part of their future.

Based on his performances near the end of the season before his injury, Romero himself appeared to be disinterested in a future with Tottenham despite having been named the captain last year as the heir to the legendary Son Heung-min. Though since Romero had been openly flirting with La Liga giants just prior to that, his lack of support and seeming lack of effort may not be wholly surprising, especially to the justly cynical Spurs supporter.

Romero's exit from Tottenham Hotspur this summer transfer window is almost a factoid taken for granted by the supporter base, and since Spurs were performing better with Kevin Danso than with Cristian Romero next to Micky van de Ven, he may not be missed with countryman Marcos Senesi joining on a free and Luka Vuskovic set to return to the first team after an incredible maiden campaign as a senior player over in the Bundesliga.

Cristian Romero was a real disappointment

ESPN analyst Ian Darke recently released his Premier League awards, and Captain Romero found himself on the list as the lone Spurs representative, though he would have liked to have been left off. Because the honor Romero received was an ignonimous one - a spot on the most disappointing XI of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

Darke wrote of Romero, "At his best, Romero is a good defender, but he was sent off twice and is prone to errors. Frankly, Spurs did better without him, winning three of their last seven games to stay up (they won none of the previous seven matches Romero started). He was also guilty of some off-field criticism of the club not befitting a captain."

Nothing Ian Darke said about Romero is unfair at all. He did not act like a captain in the slightest, making rash challenges in the Premier League relegation battle, looking a pace off it in terms of his effort, and even generating criticism from Roberto De Zerbi for his leadership when he nearly abandoned the team for Argentina on Matchday 38.

Romero is a talented player, but he's not a player with a lot of future value, he is not a leader, nor is he better than the center backs Tottenham are about to add next season. And with a spot on the disappointing XI, Romero has shown he is not at the level he - and Tottenham - thought he was.
