The Argentina national team is back in the World Cup Final after a gutsy performance in the semifinals against England, coming from behind to take the Three Lions down 2-1 in yet another clutch victory.

Lionel Messi was the deserved Man of the Match after recording two assists, including a beautiful winner with a cross from his "weak" foot, but one of the other standout players for Argentina on the night was Tottenham Hotspur center back Cristian Romero.

The 2022 World Cup winner is headed to his second straight World Cup Final, ready to add yet another prestigious trophy to his ledger after already winning Copa America and even the Europa League with Spurs.

Cristian Romero has played himself into a dream move

But Romero's incredible defensive performances are going to earn him even more than a trip to the World Cup Final. Because while a date with Spain is the ultimate prize indeed, Romero is also gunning for a dream transfer to La Liga, having spoken about one a year ago.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are both after Romero this summer, and with the Argentinian center back guaranteed to leave Spurs this summer, especially after they signed compatriot Marcos Senesi and Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke, these performances are only going to raise his value and make a move more likely.

Cristian Romero was dominant against England, shutting down former Spur Harry Kane in the attack. He had a whopping 10 clearances for Argentina with four tackles and two interceptions as the best defender on the pitch for his team. He also completed more than 96 percent of his passes, continuing his streak of great performance on the ball, including a few highlight reel passes to get his team out of sticky situations.

Barcelona will probably need to sell off a center back in order to accomodate a big money transfer for Romero, and while Atletico Madrid usually like to stay cheaper on the transfer market, Diego Simeone has to be going head over heels over what Romero continues to do in big games.

Tottenham Hotspur fans will not be moved because of how Romero played for them in crunch last season when they needed him most, and, in fact, many Spurs fans will look at this and think, "OK, where was this with us?"

But Romero seemed checked out of Tottenham all season in 2025/26. He is one step closer to his dream move to a La Liga giant, and if he plays like this in the World Cup Final, maybe Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid will throw their hat in the ring, too.
