Tottenham Hotspur are often a mixed bag on the transfer market, but they got a couple of big signings spot on last summer transfer window. Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons look like two massive stars that Spurs can build around, and they were both inexpensive enough that even Daniel Levy signed the duo from West Ham United and RB Leipzig without a second thought.

Simons had injuries and struggled under the woeful coaching of Thomas Frank, but there were brief moments in which the Dutchman showed world class brilliance and that he has the potential to be Spurs best player going forward. And for the brief moments he was healthy under Roberto De Zerbi before his ACL tear, he looked like an absolute demon.

So even though Simons tore his ACL at the end of the 2025/26 Premier League season, the Lilywhites do not have a tinge of regret about signing him from the Bundesliga last summer. And in fact, they now have another reason to love his transfer even more.

Xavi Simons owns Alejandro Garnacho

Because according to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have told their flop attacking midfielder and winger hybrid signing from 2025 Alejandro Garnacho, formerly of Manchester United, that he can leave this summer window. Chelsea do not consider the Argentinian international untouchable, and if they get a good proposal, he will go. The Blues have already started initial movements on his transfer with other clubs reportedly interested.

Garnacho will have lasted just one year at Stamford Bridge, and he was the player Chelsea signed over Xavi Simons instead of trying harder to sign the Dutchman. That allowed the Barcelona academy product to fall into the laps of Tottenham Hotspur for slightly less than the amount the Lilywhites paid for striker Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth the previous year.

Tottenham were actually linked to Garnacho around the time that Chelsea started showing interest, but they quickly moved away from him, likely because they were turned off by his attitude and realized that Simons was a way, way better player.

Simons and Garnacho play similar roles and positions, but there is no doubt looking at it a year later that Simons is 10 times the player and has even more upside, which was what made Chelsea and others try to rate Alejandro Garnacho higher. Tottenham got the way better deal, and with Chelsea already giving up on Garnacho, Spurs have to be even more delighted with how things turned out for them.
