By now, it's clear what Tottenham need to do with Souza

Tottenham Hotspur have four options at left back now after signing Andy Robertson from Liverpool as a free agent this summer, confirming a move that had been in the works for months and nearly actually happened in the winter if it were not for Kostas Tsimikas getting stuck on loan in Rome.

So now Spurs have Robertson, Destiny Udogie, England international Djed Spence, and forgotten winter signing Souza at left back. Maybe Udogie could be dangled as trade bait after an injury plagued season and a strong World Cup from Spence could lead to transfer rumors down that path, too, beacuse it is a crowded field at left back.

According to Tom Allnutt of The Times, the likely move is for Souza to go out on loan this summer transfer window. He appears to be the most likely player on Tottenham Hotspur to score a big loan this summer, as Rangers Mikey Moore is in contention but will try to convince Roberto De Zerbi of his merits as a first team player in the 2026/27 season.

Brazil need Souza to be a star, too

The decision to loan Souza should be obvious. The U21 left back arrived at Tottenham with a lot of hype as the next great fullback for the Brazil national team after shining for Palmeiras, one of the country's proudest clubs. And though Brazil have had amazing fullbacks in their history like Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Dani Alves, Marcelo, and Filipe Luis, they literally have nothing right now.

So Souza's development as a potential world class left back is a massively underrated storyline in world football, and while he actually played well enough last season to merit consideration for minutes over Djed Spence, that clearly is not going to happen, no matter how exciting Roberto De Zerbi likes to play. Plus, De Zerbi seems super focused on rebuilding Spurs with veterans to get them back to top five status.

Andy Robertson crowding the left back position further means Souza is almost guaranteed to get a loan move. Tottenham have to find the right destination for him. Since he is just getting his feet wet in European football, a move outside of the Premier League or La Liga makes sense initially, but since Souza did not look immediately out place in the English top flight on an otherwise awful team under Thomas Frank, he can absolutely crack it in the Bundesliga or Ligue 1 to start with. A similar loan to what Luka Vuskovic got at Hamburg could make a ton of sense for everyone.
