Tottenham Hotspur are having one of the most productive summer transfer windows in European football, landing three new defenders and the midfield axis of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes to execute the plan Roberto De Zerbi wants. De Zerbi needs to be playing on the front foot and Tottenham were never in control of games with the personnel they had, and now he has the foundation he craves to build from.
It is time, then, for Tottenham to add the real party pieces to that foundation. Spurs do not have a single true superstar in their attack, and they really only have two players they know can be stars for them. Summer 2025 signings Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus are worth featuring heavily, but Spurs need to bring in some players who can actually score the goals and get open consistently so those creative types like Kudus and Simons can really shine.
Tottenham have rebulit their defense and midfield. What needs to happen now is a concerted effort to sign goal scorers who can create their own shot at finish. Now, every team craves these kinds of players, and while Tottenham Hotspur used to literally have two of the best in Premier League history in Son Heung-min and Harry Kane, they have come nowhere near replacing them.
Tottenham have to go full court press
Spurs struggled to build the team and the foundation around Kane and Son to win for years out of sheer complacency under Daniel Levy. Now, they are shedding that inferiority with Roberto De Zerbi, making big signings like Sandro Tonali, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, and Mateus Fernandes. But the opposite is the case. Now Spurs need the difference makers, and while they will not have a Son or Kane available to sign on the summer transfer market, they need to bring in forwards who can lead the line better than Richarlison and Dominic Solanke.
Right now, Tottenham have quality role players up front. Mathys Tel has flashes of brilliance but does not have the experience yet to start on the left wing for a top five side in the Premier League. Richy and Solanke can be veteran backups to a true star up top, but they can never be the No. 1's or come close to scoring 20 Premier League goals per season year after year.
These are the players Spurs need: they need forwards who can contribute to 20 goals per season, two of them. Spurs have more than a month left in the transfer window to strike a deal, but they do not have an eternity - and these players are more coveted and more difficult to capture than even Fernandes and Tonali.
