Tottenham Hotspur already signed Bournemouth star Marcos Senesi for free after his fantastic 2025/26 Premier League season, as Spurs were able to hold off interest from other big clubs, including Juventus, who were trying to hijack the signing.
Even so, Tottenham are still after another notable name in the Premier League at the center back position, as they have been making bids for Brighton star Jan Paul van Hecke, who did some excellent work with Roberto De Zerbi in the past.
While there has been quiet optimism that Tottenham can strike a deal, it appears Spurs are running into issues. Brighton CEO Paul Barber told talkSPORT that the Seagulls have actually rejected a second transfer bid from Spurs, and he even confirmed that there is substantial interest from other clubs in the Dutch international.
Luka Vuskovic is a better player
That is brutal news for Tottenham, because it means Van Hecke could be more expensive than anticipated. Many were hoping Spurs could get Roberto De Zerbi's preferred center back option for less than 50 million pounds, but if Brighton are rejecting reasonable offers and obtaining leverage from having other interested parties, then Van Hecke could quickly become expensive - and simply not worth it.
Jan Paul van Hecke is a good player and is relatively young at center back at the age of 25, but for 50 million pounds less, Tottenham Hotspur can sign an even better player. In fact, that player is only 19 and completely free.
Yes, the pathway for Luka Vuskovic back to the Tottenham first team has become disappointingly narrow in light of the Van Hecke interest, which has impacted the Croatian sensation more negatively than anyone else, especially with massive clubs like Bayern Munich and Barcelona circling with interest in this potential steal of the summer, were Spurs foolish enough to sell (and history says that they, sadly, are).
If the Tottenham talks for Van Hecke fall apart because of other clubs or Brighton's demands, then that opens things up for Spurs to welcome Vuskovic back as a first team player. And since Vuskovic was arguably the best player in the entire Bundesliga after the Bayern Munich front three, that is actually an upgrade on Van Hecke, even though people will point to Van Hecke's Premier League experience. But, well, that is why Spurs signed Marcos Senesi, and Micky van de Ven should have more than enough Premier League experience himself.
