Young Tottenham Hotspur center midfielder Lucas Bergvall had a truly disastrous outing against Brentford on Matchday 1 of the 2026/27 Premier League season, and while anyone can have a bad game, especially when the entire team is off, it is jarring just how poorly Bergvall played and how much worse he made his teammates look.
Bergvall was simply untenable on the pitch with how many basic mistakes he made in the middle of the park, and it was almost as if the Swedish international did not know how to play the position at a Premier League level. He was bad last season and tried to chalk things up to Thomas Frank coaching the team poorly, but this performance against Brentford really exposed glaring weaknesses in his game.
As Roberto De Zerbi implied after the game, Bergvall needed this humbling and had to show to himself that he is not ready to start for Tottenham Hotspur or maybe even anyone in the Premier League right now despite his dreams, at one point this summer before De Zerbi convinced him otherwise, of being the next Elliot Anderson for Nottingham Forest.
Lucas Bergvall is a ticking time bomb on the ball
There were so many mistakes Bergvall made, but one of them was purely out of arrogance, which was his recurring ball losses around his own penalty area. Lucas Bergvall's touch was far too nonchalant, lazy even, and these careless errors directly led to easy goals and opportunities for the Brentford attack, playing right into the hands of an aggressive and hungry Bees side in front of their own swarm of fans in the hive.
Tottenham could not have taught Bergvall a better lesson than the one the U21 talent taught himself at the Gtech on Saturday afternoon. This is the sort of humbling that will make Bergvall work harder to improve and be more vigilant in tough areas, instead of thinking he is better than the players at a "smaller" club, because in terms of accomplishments, Bergvall is smaller than all of them after flopping on a subpar Sweden team at the World Cup and playing just as poorly for a Tottenham side that nearly got relegated last season - and actually improved without him on the pitch.
All of this sounds very harsh on Bergvall, but Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs need to be harsh to the young player in order to not coddle him and challenge him to be better than he is right now. Because right now, he is creating more chances for the other team than he is for Tottenham.
