Tottenham Hotspur youngster Luca Williams-Barnett has been one of the stories of the summer so far, breaking out of nowhere with tremendous performances in friendly appearances against MK Dons, Auckland FC, and now Sydney FC, where he deposited a gutsy panenka in the back of the net during the shootout that Spurs won.
From the moment he stepped onto the pitch in the summer opener against MK Dons, LWB dazzled the Spurs faithful with his confidence and quality of touch, taking defenders on and turning like he were a Zinedine Zidane copy cat with absolutely no fear in the world.
Everyone at Tottenham is taking notice of Williams-Barnett, with club legends past and present taking their turns praising the 17 year old sensation, and even Roberto De Zerbi is talking up how special of a prospect the homegrown midfielder is.
Luca Williams-Barnett has the right skill set for Spurs
The latest club icon to wax poetic about Wiliams-Barnett is defender Ben Davies, who pointed out the fearlessness that Spurs fans are all raving about. Davies said, via Hotspur Lane, "He's a really top player. A lot of potential. I think you can see the qualities he's got. He'll now just develop the habits of the game. But to have no fear and just want the ball again even if he loses it is great."
Davies is just the latest respected individual at N17 to talk about how Luca Williams-Barnett has all the potentail in the world, and not only that, but the Wales international is already referring to LWB as a "top player" despite him not being in the first team yet.
That last part about Ben Davies describing Williams-Barnett's game is especially important, because he falls in the right spectrum of what you want to see in a player. On the one hand, you don't want players who are too afraid to lose the ball, because they won't make things happen or cause threat, especially if you are a big club like Tottenham Hotspur. But then you also don't want players witih an ego or lacking effort who lose the ball then point the finger at others or walk back instead of trying to win it again.
Williams-Barnett strikes the right balance of a technical player with the skill and confidence to go right at defenses whlie having the humility and work rate to just win it right back if he messes up, which can often lead to even better chances for the team amidst the chaos.
