Tottenham Hotspur raised more than a few eyebrows in the winter transfer window when they originally showed a great deal of interest in veteran Liverpool left back Andrew Robertson, and they would have signed him if the Reds were able to get Kostas Tsimikas back early from his loan deal to Serie A giants AS Roma.
Instead, Spurs waited to sign Robertson for free in the summer transfer window, with Roberto De Zerbi giving the green light to the veteran Premier League icon as a key backup at left back in a position that was already three deep with Destiny Udogie, Djed Spence, and Souza.
But with Souza likely to go out on loan to another big European club this summer and Spence's own future in a state of flux after a heroic World Cup campaign with England, Robbo may suddenly be locked in as the injury prone Udogie's No. 2.
Andy Robertson is the Ben Davies replacement
There is still some skepticism from Spurs fans about the Robertson signing and his wages, but his teammates are all on board. That includes Ben Davies, the veteran center back and left back whom Robertson is, on paper ,replacing as the veteran utility defender.
Davies is already a big fan of Andy Robertson, and his words of praise for the Liverpool icon will make Tottenham Hotspur feel that much better about taking the plunge to sign the aging fullback. The Wales international said of the Scotland star, via Spurs Insight, "He's come into the team and he's a player I've played against a lot but he also brings a lot of experience to the group. It's early days at the moment but he's settled in straight away and I'm sure he's going to be a big help for us."
Tabbed as a future coach of Tottenham Hotspur who even received interest as a possible player coach before Spurs were able to secure Roberto De Zerbi against the odds, Ben Davies's words carry a lot of weight in the locker room and even in the front office.
So if he is approving of Robertson as his own replacement and loves his experience with the conviction that Robbo will help the team, Tottenham will feel at ease here. The main reason why Spurs signed Robertson was to be a locker room leader like Davies is, and Davies sounds ready to pass the torch to Robbo when he retires, presumably at the end of the 2026/27 season.
