Tottenham Hotspur center midfielder Lucas Bergvall is one of the biggest gems of the club, but his stock took a turn for the worst under Thomas Frank last season. The former Brentford manager came right in and misprofiled the Swedish international, and he never really readjusted either, continually playing Bergvall outside of his natural role as a No. 8 in the Spurs system.
Well, that all caught up to Tottenham, because the 2024/25 Europa League champion wants out. Even though he had a pretty poor World Cup campaign as Graham Potter's Sweden were one of the weakest sides in the tournament, Bergvall submitted his transfer request to Spurs.
And almost immediately, Nottingham Forest jumped the line. Whereas Aston Villa had always been linked, Forest have swooped in and become the No. 1 favorites to sign Bergvall away, and while Tottenham Hotspur and Roberto De Zerbi have been trying to convince Johan Lange's big find to stay at the club, it does not look like it is working.
A major Lucas Bergvall blow
Nottingham Forest are making harder and harder pushes for the 20 year old box to box midfielder, and with a 45 million pound bid set to come through that is improved and closer to Spurs asking price of 50 million pounds (similar to what they sold their other gem, center back Luka Vuskovic, to Premier League side Brighton this summer transfer window), Bergvall really could be leaving.
Tottenham and Forest do not have a good relationship after what happened with Morgan Gibbs-White last summer, but it looks like there is nothing De Zerbi and Co. can do to stop this train from rolling. Because now, Sami Mokbel of BBC Sport is going so far as to report that like Vuskovic, Lucas Bergvall wants to go for the new club in the Premier League after his signature. Mokbel says that Bergvall wants the transfer to Nottingham Forest.
It is a devastating piece of news for Tottenham supporters and the last thing they wanted. Obviously, Spurs fans do not want to lose any top young talent and already had to suffer from the Luka Vuskovic exit to Brighton, but out of all the teams to join, going to Nottingham Forest as the Elliot Anderson replacement is a crazy blow. Spurs are going to lose Bergvall this summer no matter what, so trying to facilitate a different landing spot for him than Forest may be the best they can do.
