Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall are two of the most prized prospects at Tottenham Hotspur, but they are both trending in different directions, which has quietly been the case over the past six months. Whereas Gray was the best player on Tottenham in the second half of the season when Spurs were at their worst and perhaps the lone true saving grace of the brief Igor Tudor era, Bergvall slid into despair through both injury and his own underwhelming play.
With Tottenham interested in both Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, Bergvall could not handle the heat and submitted a transfer request to Spurs behind the scenes during the 2026 World Cup. But instead of responding in the right way with improved play on the pitch during the World Cup for Sweden, Bergvall continued to be an inconsistent mess.
Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs are still trying to recruit Bergvall to stay at the club amidst strong interest from Nottingham Forest, among others in the Premier League, and whlie they are doing that, Gray is stanading out again this preseason.

It was quite the juxtaposition to see Gray leading a young midfield against Auckland FC with the captain's armband around him just months after De Zerbi declare him a future captain even while he was benched in favor of veterans whom he had outplayed for months while Bergvall was the subject of De Zerbi's pointed press conference marks of, essentially, I want you to stay but I don't really care if you go.
Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray have shown the opposites in terms of mentality and being COYS. Whereas Gray never once complained about being benched for Rodrigo Bentancur or Conor Gallagher despite being the superior player, Bergvall submitted a transfer request after a poor season and followed that up with no better play for Sweden with the whole world watching.
Bergvall wants to take the easy way out and literally devalue his club by requesting a transfer and flirt with an enemy in Nottingham Forest, while Gray dug his heels in and has been implictly rewarded by Roberto De Zerbi with the trust of the captaincy, even if only in a preseason game.
Gray has sent Bergvall a powerful message. If you put your head down, work hard, and believe in yourself, people will take notice and respect that. In the case of Bergvall, Tottenham Hotspur know he can be a great player, but he has to admit he needs a lot of work to be there yet. And whining about it is not going to solve anything. All it has done is cost him some respect.
