Tottenham Hotspur 20 year old center midfielder Lucas Bergvall recently submitted a transfer request to the club after it became clear they have every intention of siging two top midfielders in Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali to further boost Roberto De Zerbi's squad after closing three deals for new defenders.

Spurs definitely do need better midfielders, as they have been unable to control games these last few seasons as they have slid off a cliff in the Premier League - and De Zerbi is definitely a manager who wants to play out on the front foot.

Bergvall disappointed a lot of Spurs fans with his transfer request. All the fans still believe greatly in him and have always hyped him up as a future world class player, but even his biggest fans have to admit that Bergvall had a poor 2025/26 season. Thomas Frank definitely did him no favors with how he utilized the Swedish international, but when he did play, he struggled, especially in the relegation fight when it mattered most.

Archie Gray is not worried at all about the attempted signings

What really seals home the problem with Bergvall's mentality and the lack of competitive fire is comparing him to the other young center midfield gem at N17, Archie Gray. Though Lucas Bergvall actually came into the 2025/26 season with more hype and a stronger resume, Gray was the one who became more important to the team and was the supporters' Player of the Season for Totenham Hotspur.

Gray actually played his best football when Tottenham were at their worst and sliding into relegation in February and March, and he managed to distinguish himself as a crucial player even under Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor. Between the two of them, Gray was robbed the most by Roberto De Zerbi when the Italian manager decided to stick with veteran players like Conor Gallagher and Rodrigo Bentancur in the starting XI, because Gray was actually playing amazing football.

Yet you never hear a peep from Archie Gray about being disgruntled, floating around transfer rumors, or wanting playing time. Massive clubs like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid started showing interest during the season because of Gray's performances, but they have never gotten any legs because at no point have Gray or his reps tried to rock the boat.

That loyalty and that desire to keep fighting for his minutes at Tottenham is massive, and even though Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes are way bigger competitors to Gray and his role, he has not ruffled any feathers. That really exposes the fact that Bergvall has to fix up his outlook and mentality.
