Tottenham Hotspur star center back Cristian Romero is on the verge of a transfer out of N17 after letting his team down when the season ended and trying to go back to Argentina instead of supporting his teammates with their entire Premier League future on the line in the relegation battle. Throughout the relegation fight, Romero's attitude and commitment as captain were called into question, and he was playing way below his standard with many fans seeing that as a clear sign he was just packing it in.
Romero was already openly begging for a big move to La Liga last summer, and only handing him the captaincy as the heir to Son Heung-min got him to recommit to Tottenham. And that commitment did not seem to last long, with Romero giving up the fight during the 2025/26 season when the going got tough.
After a strong World Cup campaign despite Argentina falling short in the end against Spain, Romero has plenty of suitors in La Liga and Serie A, with even Italian champions Inter Milan joining Spanish champions Barcelona with significant interest in the 28 year old center back.
Antonio Conte is missing the point, as usual
Although Tottenham Hotspur fans want Cuti Romero gone and the media is reporting that the ship has sailed, some key figures of the club's past are defending Romero hard and want to see Spurs keeping him. The latest person to go to bat for Romero is, of all people, disgraced ex Tottenham manager Antonio Conte.
The Italian coach said of Romero, via Chris Cowlin,“His performance in this World Cup has been rather underestimated. He is having an extraordinary tournament, the best defender by a mile compared to all the others. He has improved so much. I read that some Italian teams want him, but I don’t know if Tottenham want to sell… He is a tough player, and Argentine’s still play street football, which is a positive thing that we are missing in Italy. Every match is it’s either you or me, so irritating your opponent is part of the game.”
Now, the irritation of the opponents is not a problem for Tottenham Hotspur fans, who appreciate having that kind of energy in their teams against the opposition, as Richarlison, Djed Spence, Pedro Porro, and a couple of other Spurs players whom fans actually like can do that.
But Romero quit on the team last season. If Antonio Conte were his coach at Tottenham last season, he would not be talking about him as a "tough player" or someone "positive". And also, calling Romero the best defender of the World Cup of a mile is not true at all and a slap in the face of Pau Cubarsi, Marc Cucurella, and, of course, Porro who were all much better (though Romero was good since he actually cared about Argentina).
