Tottenham got off to winning ways in the Champions League last night. The Spurs squad was completely unrecognizable, but for all the right reasons. The "history of the Tottenham" appears to be in the process of a rewrite, because if they mean to go on, other Champions League teams should take Tottenham seriously.
But let's not ignore the elephant in the room. Sure, Thomas Frank is overseeing some excellent football at the moment, but the Champions League return was entirely Ange Postecoglou's doing. Spurs went about it in an unorthodox, gruelling manner, but Tottenham players sang under the Champions League lights because of the Aussie.
Last night, Lucas Bergvall made his Champions League debut and shone in it. It only took four minutes for him to force an own goal out of Brazilian goalkeeper Luiz Júnior. Understandably, Bergvall took the celebration and ran with it - and why not?
Ange Postecoglou granted Lucas Bergvall his lifelong wish
Bergvall revealed on his social media that last night was a dream come true for him. Ever since he was a kid (he still is, really), the Tottenham midfielder has wished to play in the Champions League.
On Instagram, Bergvall said: "A dream come true. First Champions League game, at home in front of you and a win. Something I've dreamed of since I was a kid."
He also relayed this message to Tottenham's official channels, saying: “Yeah, [playing in the Champions League] has been a dream since I was a young kid to play here and in front of the supporters at home, and a win could not be better,”
Bergvall is turning into a completely different beast under Thomas Frank, which is great to see. But he has Ange Postecoglou to thank for granting his lifelong wish of playing in the Champions League.
At the time, fans were against Ange and his approach. Understandably so, it was gruelling to watch week in, week out. But Ange had a plan, and that plan paid off in the end. He might have got some stick for it, but now plenty of young Tottenham players like Bergvall are reaping the rewards of his madness.
Ange Postecoglou now coaches Nottingham Forest. Tottenham fans will hope it's not at their expense, but the same old Ange will undeniably have his eyes on silverware for the East Midlands side.
Make no mistake about it, this may be a Thomas Frank team now, but Bergvall still has a Postecoglou print.
