Scotland's fate is no longer in their hands, as several things need to fall into place for them to make it to the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup in this expanded tournament. They were embarrassed in a decisive game by Brazil 3-0, but no single player suffered a bigger humilitation than captain Andrew Robertson, who was substituted at the half.
Many fans are wondering if Robertson suffered a knock or was taken off for fitness issues, but there are a lot of Scottish national team supporters who were more than happy to see "Robbo" off the pitch and believe he was taken off because he had such a stinker.
Robertson concerningly could not cope with young Brazilian phenom Rayan on the right wing. Rayan had his way with the Scotland defense, forcing an early mistake for Vinicius Junior's gift of an opening goal, and he would finish the night with four key passes and two dribbles completed as one of the Selecao's top three performers.
Andrew Robertson was not at the races
Meanwhile, Andy Robertson genuinely looked like he was toast at the top level. He was slow, unassertive, constantly brambling about the pitch in defense, and offering no real attacking solutions in possession or verve to get forward.
Robertson heard for the last couple of seasons at Anfield that he was finished, and Liverpool were more than happy to let him leave on a free. They would have even happily sold him to Tottenham Hotspur in the winter transfer window if they were able to get Kostas Tsimikas back at left back as cover for Hungarian Milos Kerkez.
Now, Robertson is headed off to Spurs, and Spurs have to be concerned that they are going to be spending on wages for the next few years on a player they should not have even touched. Tottenham already have three other left back options in Destiny Udogie, Souza, and Djed Spence, and based on how poorly Robertson played against Brazil, it is possible the newest addition is the worst of them.
Robertson has a lot to prove when he retursn to Premier League action for the 2026/27 season, because even if Scotland are able to get the rolls to go their way and make it to the knockouts, what we have seen from the left back over the last year for Liverpool and Scotland is nothing short of poor. Against Brazil with everyone watching, Robertson had a huge chance to make a statement, but he confirmed a lot of the negativity instead.
