If Tottenham Hotspur can manage to keep Djed Spence amidst interest from Serie A champions Inter Milan and a few Premier League clubs following his insane performances in defense for the England national team as they finished third this summer at the World Cup, then they will have the most loaded left backs potentially in world football.
Spence was amazing for England this summer, but he is only the No. 2 left back for Roberto De Zerbi behind Destiny Udogie, as the Italian international is one of the best in the world when he is fully healthy. Behind them, Spurs have prospect Souza, who could be the future of the Brazil national team, and a legitimate icon of the modern Premier League in summer free agent signing Andy Robertson from Liverpool.
Although Robertson is fading due to age and wear and tear and is coming off a bad World Cup with Scotland, Tottenham do not think he is finished yet, and it is telling that De Zerbi OK'd the deal despite Robbo having been in the works for Spurs as a free agent all the way back in January when they nearly signed him from Liverpool then, too.
Spurs are massive
Far from a mercenary coming from another big Premier League club for one last run in the top flight and cashing in a big check from Spurs, Robbo sounds legitimately like he is soaking up the club and wants to do everything he can to win here, just as he did at Liverpool.
In speaking about why his January transfer did not materialize, Andy Robertson said something that revealed just how fully COYS he is ready to be. Robbo said, via Hotspur Lane, “I don’t think it’s a secret that it nearly happened in January and it didn’t, for one reason or another. Once the January window closed a lot of options came away and it was all about making the right decision, this club is a massive club.”
It does not sound like much, but Robertson talking up Tottenham Hotspur and how "massive" they are - not just "big" but "massive" - is important, and it is important to Tottenham fans who have had to hear from other clubs in the Big Six like Liverpool and fans from clubs outside the Big Six like Aston Villa's, West Ham's, and Newcastle's that Spurs are no longer a big club.
There are even some fans, particularly Villa's, who think that Spurs should be dropped out of the Big Six. But they are massive, they attract big names like Robertson, and those big names feel a sense of identity with the club. Spurs fans have been screaming this to the world, and now they can point to Robbo as someone who agrees.
