Andy Robertson is in a bit of a tough spot as he enters his first season with Tottenham Hotspur, because he had a poor World Cup as Scotland flopped on the big stage. After looking leggy and losing his starting job for Premier League giants Liverpool, Robbo looked finished again this summer, unable to make an impact even against opponents that, on paper, he should have performed well against.
But Robertson is an icon of Liverpool and one of the best Premier League left backs of the last decade. Tottenham have signed him as a free agent and paid his wages following interest in the previous winter transfer window because they think he can bring leadership and depth to the left back position.
Since he was such a key player for Liverpool for so long, the worry about signing a kind of veteran player like this is that they are just here for the ride, for a final big paycheck and run in the Premier League, and that they are not really here to be a part of a team.
Andy Robertson proved he is COYS
Andy Robertson does not sound like he is a mercenary, though. In a recent interview with Spurs official site, Robertson discussed why he chose the No. 3 at Tottenham Hotspur, for example, and his reasoning is the kind of a humble person who respects his new club and is not here for a motive other than to be a part of the team, truly.
Robbo said, via Daily Hotspur, "I was first 26 at Hull and Liverpool. But when I came here I knew that the number 26 was used by the legend that is Ledley! So from my perspective I wanted to respect that. He was an unbelievable player and did so many good things for this club."
That statement from Andy Robertson will bring a tear to some Tottenham fans, because it is an ultimate sign of respect to a club icon in Ledley King, who probably would have been known as the best center back of the Premier League era had it not been for devastating injuries.
King is a beloved figure around N17 and was one of the best English players in his prime, so Robertson choosing a different jersey number out of a sign of respect despite arguably being a more well known name to Premier League fans than King these days is massive. And if Tottenham fans were doubting of Robbo wanting to be fully COYS, this gesture shows otherwise.
