Tottenham Hotspur have officially sealed their survival in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Everton, which means veteran center back Marcos Senesi will be joining Spurs as a free agent from Bournemouth in a deal that has been in the works for months.
Senesi is coming off a strong season, even better than that of Spurs captain Cristian Romero, but he is a flawed player who does not necessarily raise Spurs ceiling. With Romero set to leave the club this summer barring an unforeseen change of heart, Senesi is an emergency player in the squad who can competently start.
There are other options in the Premier League at the center back position than just Senesi, and if Spurs are having second thoughts or want to bring someone else, one of Micky van de Ven's old friends from Wolfsburg is available.
Center back is still a potential topic for Tottenham
According to a report from Fabrice Hawkins of RMC Sport, Crystal Palace's match against Premier League champions Arsenal on Sunday was Maxence Lacroix's last with the Eagles. The French center back is not in any talks to extend his deal with the club, which officially expires in 2029. Lacroix's transfer is scheduled, making him join Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi, and other big names to have left Palace at a bargain price. Per Hawkins, there are multiple Premier League clubs interested in the 26 year old.
Lacroix can be overly aggressive and isn't a perfect player, but he has always been a very good center back. He was actually better than Micky van de Ven at Wolfsburg, though he did no thave the same athleticism and upside. And he has been better than all the Tottenham Hotspur center backs in the Premier League itself this season, taking Hamburg's Luka Vuskovic out of the equation, playing so well that he was at as good of a level as Marc Guehi when the two were together at Selhurst Park.
It's too late to back out of the Marco Senesi deal at this point, but if Tottenham were to sadly miss out on Micky van de Ven or Luka Vuskovic next season, Lacroix could be affordable, Premier League proven starting center back to join forces with Kevin Danso and one of Vuskovic or Van de Ven in a quartet with Senesi. And Tottenham still have another spot in the rotation that will be relieved by another fully expected departure in Radu Dragusin.
