Tottenham Hotspur have completely changed the dynamic of their midfield this summer transfer window with the combined 185 million pound tranfer investment in Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali in the middle of the park. While Tonali cost 100 million pounds and is the bigger name, Fernandes actually had the biggest club after him, as Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho were seriously pondering a move before Roberto De Zerbi acted swiftly to push Spurs to bid 85 million pounds so that neither Real nor the significantly more interested Manchester United would make the signing.
Although Fernandes played for one of the worst teams in the Premier League last season and was a part of West Ham United's relegation to the EFL Championship, the 21 year old Portuguese international was also by far the Hammers best player and one of the best young players and best overall midfielders in the English top flight.
It has taken no time this preseason for Tottenham to fall in love with Fernandes, and Spurs supporters are already very excited about what the future could hold for him. And the hype train is definitely leaving the station even before the start of the 2026/27 Premier League appearance.
Mateus Fernandes can go straight to the top
On his YouTube channel, Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold waxed poetic about Mateus Fernandes and the potential he has at Tottenham Hotspur. Gold says that Tottenham are incredibly excited about the young midfielder and already knew he was going to be a special player, which is why they signed him and were willing to spend so much to get him. But Gold also says that now that they are seeing him in person and working with him closely, Tottenham think that he is even better than advertised and can be one of the world's best.
He said, via Arabic Spurs, "There's huge excitement inside Tottenham towards Matheus Fernandes. They knew he was a special player and the numbers pointed to that, but after working with him up close...The reaction inside the club became: My God... this player could become one of the best midfielders in the world."
Look, if Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid have a player in the top three of their defensive midfield transfer list, then that player must be very good. Fernandes was one of the top in the Premier League as a defensive player, creator, progressor, and even scored goals, too. Tottenham have a specal player on their hands, and at 85 million pounds, he is well worth the investment. Already, the hype train is going straight to the moon after growing rockets attached to it.
