Tottenham Hotspur have been the most active team in the Premier League this summer transferw indow, which was necessary after finishing 17th for a second straight season and nearly getting relegated. Spurs still have a lot of work to do with major needs in the attack, but, so far, the organization finally looks like it is serious about backing their manager.
Roberto De Zerbi's biggest move of the offseason for Tottenham was to land both Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes for a combined 185 million pounds. Tonali himself went for 100 million from Newcastle United, with Spurs signing the Italian international ahead of interest from Arsenal, Manchester City, and even Real Madrid.
But now, Arsenal are poised to make a counter statement to Tottenham for Newcastle's other big midfield prize, Bruno Guimaraes. While Bruno is not as high upside of a player as Tonali, he has been even more important to the Magpies and could be the ideal upgrade for the Gunners over Martin Zubimendi alongside Declan Rice.
Arsenal give Tottenham a real worry
According to the latest information from Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have "agreed all details" on personal terms with Bruno and are now one step away from signing the former Lyon man from Newcastle. What they need to do now is come up with an agreement with Newcastle on a transfer fee. Romano reports that Arsenal will now follow up their personal agreement with Bruno G. by submitting an official transfer bid to the Magpies.
The opening bid, per Fab, will be for 70 million pounds, and while it is expected that Newcastle will reject this offer that is significantly less than what they got from Tottenham Hotspur for Sandro Tonali, Arsenal are optimistic they will get this deal done. Per Romano, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is "pushing" for the move and really wants Bruno Guimaraes at the Emirates Stadium.
While most Tottenham fans will look at this scenario and wonder why on earth Newcastle would ever sell Bruno if they feel he is more important than Tonali when they just got 100 million pounds out of the Italian and thus have no reason to sell to Arsenal, making Arsenal stronger and themselves weaker. But even under Saudi Arabian ownership, Newcastle have been surprisingly very willing to sell their best players rather than truly compete.
So Tottenham have to be worried about Arsenal countering the Tonali move by signing Bruno for potentially less, thus strengthening a midfield that was already the best in the Premier League as they won the title.
