Tottenham Hotspur have so many needs they must address this summer transfer window after finishing 17th in the Premier League and coming agonizingly close to relegation to the EFL Championship, and while Roberto De Zerbi saved Spurs and got the most out of the veteran midfielders, more quality in the middle of the park will be one of the club's biggest priorities.

Spurs fans could see that even with the visible improvements from the likes of Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Joao Palhinha in midfield, De Zerbi was still getting frustrated with the sideways and backwards passing, as well as the limitations of the players to really drive the ball forward. And that was exposed against a better team with their 2-1 loss to Chelsea, as the Tottenham midfield got completely overruled by better players.

There are a couple of players at big clubs Tottenham are hoping to poach away and give bigger roles to as stars in their midfields, and the most prominent ones are Liverpool's Curtis Jones and Manchester City's Nico Gonzalez.

Tottenham need more midfielders

Both young men have been linked to Tottenham Hotspur for months, and, now, Gonzalez may be a very achievable target. Because with Pep Guardiola set to leave and be replaced by former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, Rodri to Real Madrid isn't the only midfield transfer to watch: Nico is also having a rethink.

Paul Hirst of The Times is reporting that the 50 million pound center midfield is considering leaving Manchester City this summer with Guardiola heading out. But Gonzalez's main gripe isn't necessarily Pep going out, but he is actually wanting more playing time in the Man City midfield.

It is going to be a lot easier for Gonzalez to get those minutes with Tottenham Hotspur. Young midfielders Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall will be angling for more minutes next season, and Joao Palhinha is probably staying with Rodrigo Bentancur - and we all know how much Roberto De Zerbi loves the other Spurs veteran Conor Gallagher. However, there will still be minutes for the taking for Spurs if Nico wants them, and he is probably better than all those midfielders in the 6, 8, or 8/10 hybrid besides a healthy Xavi Simons and Gray.

Last season, the Spanish midfelder logged 1,568 minutes across 17 Premier League starts and 8 more bench appearances. Just 24, Nico is a quality footballer and has that technical quality, passing accuracy, and progression as a passer to add something different to the Spurs midfield.
