Although Tottenham Hotspur seem confident with 65 million pound 2024 summer signing Dominic Solanke as the main man up top after a strong Europa League campaign en route to a rare title triumph, Spurs still have room go grow at the No. 9 position, which has been an area of need since Harry Kane left North London to pursue (relatively) easy league titles in Bavaria.
Tottenham have mostly been focusing on the wings this summer transfer window under new manager Thomas Frank, but tantalizing striker options should not be discarded by Spurs. One of those possible candidates is free agent Jonathan David, who has been one of the best strikers in European football over the last three seasons at Lille, holding off on a big move in order to cash in on his proverbial wage and bonus chips as a free agent.
David has mostly received interest from Serie A, though, and, now, one of the giant clubs in Italy is about to secure the Canadian star as a marquee signing. Fabrizio Romano reports that Juventus are now "close" to an agreement with David on a contract after weeks of battling reigning Serie A champions Napoli for the Ligue 1 star.
Tottenham could sign a different free agent ST
So it would be a surprise if Juventus don't secure this signing, meaning arguably the best striker on the market for Tottenham will soon be off the table. Spurs, on the one hand, would love to sign a player who is free from a transfer perspective, but since Daniel Levy's main concern is always on that wage bill, there's really no way Tottenham were going to push hard enough to get him.
But the David signing to Juventus could benefit Tottenham in 2026 with an even more high-profile free agent striker signing, Dusan Vlahovic. Tottenham have already been linked to Fabio Paratici's former Serie A superstar signing from Fiorentina, and with Vlahovic currently not negotiating with the Bianconeri with eyes on a permanent transfer next summer as a free agent, Tottenham have a serious market opportunity here.
David joining Juventus can make it more likely for Vlahovic to leave, which is good news for Tottenham in two ways. Firstly, it makes it possible he goes for free to North London next summer. But secondly, if Tottenham would rather allocate less funds to wages, they could be more likely to sign him this summer, too, if Juve see him as expendable and want him gone for some money now.
Vlahovic seems to be resisting that option, but the David transfer, if it happens, makes the Serbian international that much more interesting of a transfer target to watch from a Tottenham perspective in 2025 going into 2026.
