Tottenham Hotspur had themselves a game on Wednesday night in the League Cup, bouncing back from a 3-0 blowout loss to Brentford with a dominant 5-1 win over underdogs Charlton Athletic in the Second Round of the 2026/27 League Cup.
Here are three stars and one flop from the big win.
Star: RW Mikey Moore
Tottenham Hotspur right winger Mikey Moore has a difficult future ahead of him in terms of getting minutes in the first team, since he showed against Brentford that he isn't ready for the big time. But even though he had high profile misses in that 3-0 loss, he did actually do well to get into those positions and finally converted them against Charlton with a goal and an assist.
Moore was lively throughout and the best player on the pitch, setting himself up well for a loan move to FC Koln, as Spurs will be bringing in key attacking players and therefore do not need him. But they do need him for the future, and he just set himself well for a great loan in Germany.
Star: FW Savio
Former Manchester City winger Savio came right off the bench and grilled Charlton with a goal and an assist, as well as some great dribbles. He will be tested much more in the future, but this was an ideal start in terms of showing that he can get goals and assists.
Flop: CM Lucas Bergvall
Even though Tottenham won convincingly, Lucas Bergvall was poor again, and Spurs are going to need to see better displays from him, otheriwse a loan should be on the table. This was nowhere near good enough offensively or defensively.
Star: CB Jan Paul van Hecke
Jan Paul van Hecke was not tested at all on defense by Charlton, but he earns his plaudits for bouncing back with better marking and positioning in this one. Most importantly, he got to impose himself as a passer, showing the world class ability on the ball that made him shine at the World Cup this summer with the Netherlands - and made Roberto De Zerbi sign him for 60 million euros from Brighton.
Star: ST Dominic Solanke
After Richarlison's disaster class, Dominic Solanke made a real statement of intent by scoring and doing a great job of holding the ball up, drawing fouls and getting young wingers Mikey Moore and Mathys Tel involved with space. Big Dom is someone De Zerbi believes in, and you can see why here.
