As Tottenham Hotspur worry about the pending departure of disgruntled center back prospect Luka Vuskovic, yet another young gem has handed in his request to walk to the club's brass, as center midfielder Lucas Bergvall wants to leave to get regular playing time elsewhere.
There is still time to save the day. Here are three players Tottenham should sell instead and make a gesture from Roberto De Zerbi an the club's management to Bergvall that they want him here and that he will be playing.
Conor Gallagher
Really, Tottenham should have never signed him in the first place. He probably got too much credit for the turn around in saving Spurs from relegation, because, in truth, he was closer to decent than great, but that improvement in play under Roberto De Zerbi was enough to get most fans to stop criticizing him.
The reality is that Gallagher is not worth remotely 40 million euros, he makes way too much in wages, and he is an inferior player to Lucas Bergvall in both the short and long term. If Spurs could somehow find a way to offload Gallagher, they should in a heartbeat. He was a mistake.
Pape Matar Sarr
Now, Pape Matar Sarr is the most likely of the three to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, and while he is a decent footballer and a likable person, there really is no point in keeping him around at the club.
Sar is very average technically and defensively, making up for his limitations as a passer and overall midfielder by working very hard. Spurs could have use for him in a rotational role, but it is far better to sell him and clear out space in the No. 8 position for Bergvall.
Rodrigo Bentancur
Like Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur received praise at the end of the season despite being horrendous for most of it (or injured), because he did step up big time under Roberto De Zerbi, showing more progression and less of the cowardice that has marked his career.
But Tottenham really should not value Bentancur based on a patch of a few games. He is more of an asset to Spurs than either Gallagher or even Sarr, but he has no real future value to the club. Plus, with Spurs wanting to sign Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali with Archie Gray already there, keeping Bentancur around is pointless. Sell him, make some money, and clear out more space in midfield for Bergvall to stay.
