Tottenham Hotspur have lost their first two games of the 2026/27 Premier League season by a combined score of 5-0 to Brentford and Newcastle United. But as they wait for a team they despite even more than these two in Nottingham Forest next weekend, they still have a few positives to take with them.
Omar Marmoush and Savio
Iliman Ndiaye may still be coming shortly before the summer 2026 transfer window ends and Nottingham Forest beckon, but already, Tottenham's two big attacking signings Omar Marmoush and Savio have been highly impressive in their debuts.
Savio contributed directly to two goals off the bench against Charlton Athletic in a scintillating performance in which he looked exactly like the guy who was giving Real Madrid's superstars a run for their money in the La Liga Player of the Season battle during the 2023/24 season.
Meanwhile, Marmoush did not score or assist, but he had three key passes and three dribbles completed against Newcastle United in a game in which Spurs otherwise embarrassed themselves as an attack, including starting Pedro Porro on the right wing.
Key players returning to fitness
Speaking of Porro and the right wing, starting 2025/26 season right winger Mohammed Kudus is coming back to fitness, as is the Spanish national team star, who was the best right back of the 2026 World Cup - yes, even over PSG superstar Achraf Hakimi.
That's not all, though. Micky van de Ven, Sandro Tonali, and Destiny Udogie are three more crucial starters who are coming back to full fitness. Once Tottenham have these five players firing on all cylinders, they will definitely be a better team.
Mateus Fernandes
But the biggest bright spot for Tottenham Hotspur is young defensive midfielder Mateus Fernandes, who, with James Maddison injured again after dislocating his shoulder against Brentford, is now also the club's best option as the No. 10. Fernandes has been great in all three of Spurs games to start the season, which is literally something that cannot be said for any other player on the team.
He looks like a top player in all phases, both in and out of possession and with the ball and in defense. Fernandes creates chances, wins possession, and progresses play at a high level. Even more so than Sandro Tonali, Tottenham have a franchise building block in midfield in the Portuguese international. Fernandes is a guy who makes everyone else better.
