Ange Postecoglou has named Son Heung-min as Tottenham’s next captain, with the South Korean set to permanently strap on the armband from tomorrow’s match at Brentford.

Son is the perfect choice to lead Tottenham. He is a consummate professional who leads by example. While thought of as somewhat soft-spoken, Sonny bleeds Lilywhite and is fully deserving of the armband.

While Ange had other options, Son makes the most sense. From Day 1 on the job, Ange has been impressed with Sonny’s leadership skills.

In addition to leading by example, Sonny is more boisterous than many people give him credit for. He’s a vocal presence on and off the pitch. Also, Sonny is forever optimistic, even when times are darkest.

He is also one of the most selfless professionals, always putting the team first, sometimes to his detriment.

Sonny played through most of last season injured, with a sports hernia that negatively impacted each performance. He played through pain for the good of the team, even though doing so had a counterproductive impact on him and the side.

But it shows the character of Sonny, who will take over as captain. Former club captain Hugo Lloris is expected to leave for a new destination, though we’re still determining when and where he will land.

I can’t wait to see what Sonny accomplishes this season under Ange and as Spurs captain. He deserves the badge and will do his new manager, supporters, and the club proud like he has since arriving at Spurs in 2015.
