The news supporters have been waiting for is finally here, as Tottenham is close to signing Micky van De Ven from Wolfsburg.

Yes, we’ve heard this before, but not from Fabrizio Romano, whose tweet about an hour ago describes the two clubs as being in the advanced stages of negotiations.

We’ve also heard that before, but this time it feels different, particularly given the timeline and urgency for Spurs to sign a top-tier central defender.

With any luck, the deal could be confirmed before the end of the week. Spurs have struggled to make any headway on van de Ven or Edmond Tapsoba since the last update almost a month ago.

Many suggested the van de Ven deal was all but dead. Tottenham has obviously reinvented the wheel, potentially sweetening the deal for Wolfsburg. It’s about bloody time.

Tottenham desperately needs at least one bonafide elite, or-soon-to-be elite, marshal to shore up a porous defence in the previous campaign that allowed 63 goals.

While nobody will rejoice until the deal is confirmed, this news is incredibly welcomed. If van de Ven is indeed secured, it could help convince Harry Kane to stay at the club.

He will also provide the perfect complement for Cristian Romero, who requires van de Ven’s pace as a contingency.

While van de Ven is not the finished article, his breakneck pace, agility, and uncapped potential should give Tottenham the impetus to ascend to new heights.

Still only 22 years old, van de Ven is consistently one of the first players on Wolfsburg’s team sheet. He will also develop physically in the coming years, which will help him become an elite centre-back in the top flight.

Fingers crossed, this deal doesn’t fall apart like it did about a month ago. It could be for real this time, so hold on to your butts with bated breath to hear the “Here we go!” we’ve all been waiting for what seems like an eternity.
