Rumours about Jadon Sancho’s potential move to Tottenham should be taken with a massive grain of salt for various reasons.

The Daily Star and The Sun published speculative articles earlier today (no surprise there), saying Tottenham is preparing for a £50 million bid for Sancho, who has struggled mightily since joining Manchester United for £72 million two years ago.

The 23-year-old was among the world’s most highly touted players when United purchased him from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho has endured a largely torrid stint since landing in Manchester, scoring only 12 goals and six assists in 79 appearances. Those numbers provide some insight into Sancho’s Premier League struggles.

A player paid to create and put defences on the back foot, Sancho’s performances have mostly fallen alarmingly below expectations.

He scored six goals and added three assists in 26 appearance during the 2022-23 campaign, a slight improvement over his three goals and three assists in his first season at United.

Sancho, however, is still only 23 years old and has incredible potential, but would represent too great of a risk for Tottenham.

First, United is expected to ask for £60 million, an exorbitant fee considering Sancho’s lackluster play. That astronomical valuation is far too rich for Tottenham’s blood. Even £50 million is a swollen fee after analyzing his vapid impact at Old Trafford.

Speaking of swollen, Sancho currently earns about £350,000 weekly, an outrageously high salary.

He’s arguably the most overpaid player in the top flight. Sancho is under contract at United until June 2026.

Even if United were to pay half his salary, which is by no means guaranteed, there is no way Spurs will shell out £175,000 weekly on a player who has thus far bitterly disappointed.

Spurs will be particularly cautious about spending that much on an attacking player after purchasing Richarlison, who scored one league goal in 27 appearances last season, for £60 million.

There’s also speculation that Sancho could be used as part of a swap deal for Harry Kane. That rumour has a morsel of merit but not enough to warrant concern from Spurs supporters.
