Karim Benzema confirmed his time at Real Madrid has ended, renewing speculation about Harry Kane’s potential to leave Tottenham and replace him at the Bernabeu.

Anyone who says they know what Kane will do must have a camera set up illegally in his home. Unlike in the summer of 2021, Tottenham’s all-time goalscoring leader is remaining tight-lipped about his future.

In a 2021 during an interview with Gary Neville, Kane went public about his desire to start a new career chapter at another club. He has since learned from that moment, now keeping his feelings close to the vest.

It’s anyone’s guess where the Kane saga will conclude. Spurs’ talisman is 47 goals shy of eclipsing Alan Shearer’s 260, which would make him the Premier League’s all-time top scorer.

Around the same time he made it clear about his intentions to leave, he also professed his desire to remain in the Premier League. That doesn’t leave a lot of options. Manchester City are set for the next decade, with Erling Haaland, who is scoring at a goal-per-match rate, only 22 years old.

That leaves Manchester United and Chelsea as the other two viable suitors. Murmurs about Newcastle’s interest have surfaced recently, but it’s unlikely Kane will sign for a club that isn’t almost guaranteed silverware.

While United and Chelsea would happily enter a bidding war to land Kane, Daniel Levy will be dead set against selling the club’s most prized possession to a rival. The only way Levy would acquiesce is if either club offered a ridiculous can’t-say-no-to fee.

It’s unlikely that will happen.

However, Levy will loathe the prospect of Kane leaving on a free transfer at the end of next season even more.

Cue the news out of Real Madrid and their need for an elite forward to replace Benzema. Replacing one all-time leading scorer for another makes a lot of sense.

In addition, Carlos Ancelotti is a massive proponent of Kane’s and has made that abundantly clear. Madrid also ostensibly has the funds to make Levy an offer he can’t refuse.

But even if that occurs, Kane would have to change his stance about transferring abroad. The Galacticos, however, represent an entirely different proposition.

While Real Madrid endured a disappointing 2022-23 campaign, they won’t be suppressed or silenced for long.

Not only did Madrid lose the La Liga title to Barcelona by a 10-point margin, but they were also handsomely defeated by Manchester City in the Champions League semifinal, which won’t sit well in the capital.

To bridge the gap between them and their arch-rivals, Real Madrid must make tsunami-size waves during the transfer season.

That could mean an aggressive and financially loaded approach for Kane is on the horizon.

With Benzema on his way to Saudi Arabia, Kane would be the leading man at the Bernabeu, which might add a different dynamic to the Englishman’s decision-making process.

We should have a clearer idea of what his short-term future looks like in the coming weeks. In the meantime, expect Real Madrid to push Kane and Tottenham’s resolve to the brink.
