Tottenham close to appointing Ange Postecoglou as next manager
By Gary Pearson
According to the Athletic, Tottenham is close to confirming Ange Postecoglou as the club’s next manager.
The breaking news comes on the back of Celtic’s 3-1 Scottish Cup victory over Inverness on Saturday.
Based on the news, negotiations appear to have been happening in the background, away from the media spotlight.
Late last week, Fabrizio Romano reported that Tottenham was scheduled to discuss the role with Postecoglou after the Scottish Cup on Monday or Tuesday.
Romano tweeted an update on Sunday afternoon, confirming the Athletic’s earlier report.
Tottenham and Postecoglou are closer to agreeing terms than earlier thought. Despite Tottenham being in a state of confusion, even disarray, the open role will appeal greatly to Postecoglou, who hasn’t yet managed in Europe’s top five leagues.
However, we’ve been in this position before, where negotiations are progressing with an expected agreement on the near horizon. And multiple times before things collapsed in the final stages of negotiations.
While some supporters are excited about the prospect of seeing what Postecoglou can achieve at Spurs, others are dead set against his prospective appointment.
Yes, he has obvious shortcomings, but he also has enough of an upside to excite Tottenham’s faithful.
Nothing is set in stone yet, with both parties expected to meet early this week. But the speculation is quickly turning into expectation across the mainstream media world.
The Athletic and Romano are two of the most reputable football media authorities, so the news should be taken seriously.
But nobody affiliated with Spurs will celebrate or, depending on which side of the fence you sit, condemn the new appointment until the Australian gaffer signs on the dotted line.
