How substitutes and a goal changed the game for Tottenham at Bournemouth

A timely goal and some intelligent coaching from Tottenham Hotspur changed the substitutes and the game against Bournemouth and helped Spurs take a vital three points on the road. 

Antonio Conte made his first Tottenham change at half-time, taking off Oliver Skipp in favor of Lucas Moura as the team shifted from a 3-5-2 to a 3-4-3 formation. This change had some impact, with Lucas Moura providing more of an attacking threat, although Skipp had done his best in the first half. However, just before the hour mark, a confluence of three occurrences shifted the game in Spur’s favor, helping lead to a resilient 2-3 Tottenham win.

How the game and a goal changed the substitutes

Before Spurs scored their first goal, camera shots were panning over to the sideline and the fourth official. At that point, three Tottenham players were preparing to come on, Dier, Perisic, and Bentancur.

According to the announcers, Dier was coming on for Davinson Sanchez, Bentancur for Yves Bissouma, and Perisic for Ryan Sessegnon. Fortunately for Tottenham, before the substitutes could come on, Pierre Hojbjerg fed a sweet through ball to Sessegnon for the first Tottenham goal.

Like that, two things happened. First, Spurs had stolen the momentum in full – dominating possession is one thing, but pressuring your opponents into submission is another. Second, Conte reconsidered his substitutions, and only two of the three planned changes occurred, with Dier and Bentancur coming on for Sanchez and Bissouma as planned.

Ryan Sessegnon remained on the pitch as Conte reconsidered his options and waited to see how the goal, Dier, and Bentancur impacted the game.
