It appears Tottenham have joined Chelsea and Arsenal in the Gleison Bremer sweepstakes, so is there a chance the 2021-22 Serie A defender of the year chooses Spurs?

According to Transfermarkt.com, Bremer is worth €35 million, though it’s going to take more than than for the eventual suitors to land the 25-year-old.

A bidding war, on the back of his breakthrough season with the Turin-based club, will invariably drive up his price. It’s thought the entry bid will be around £34 million. It will interesting to see how high each team is willing to go.

Even if Tottenham wins the auction, it doesn’t mean Spurs will land Bremer.

For that to happen, Bremer must prefer Spurs to Chelsea and Arsenal. The Gunners have the least attractive proposition and probably don’t stand a chance against two teams participating in the Champions League.

Can Fabio Paratici and Antonio Conte persuade the Brazilian to choose Spurs over Chelsea?

The Blues have an elite manager and a history of accumulating silverware. They won the Champions League a year ago and are used to appearing in finals and challenging atop the Premier League.

Tottenham cannot offer those alluring qualities, yet anyway.

Chelsea’s Current Defensive Issues

However, Chelsea has seen key defenders — Antonio Rüdiger and Anders Christiansen — recently depart the club.

The Blues’ still have Thiago Silva marshalling their rearguard. Silva, however, is 37 years old and isn’t able to maintain the standard he did prior to arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Even last season Silva’s game was riddled with errors and inconsistencies. That theme will continue the older he gets. Silva is going to struggle mightily to keep up with the pace of opposing strikers, regardless of how sound he is positionally.

The current defensive void at Chelsea provides Spurs with an opportunity where Bremer is concerned.

Will the 25-year-old prefer to play in a backline with 24-year-old Cristian Romero and 28-year-old Eric Dier, or a 37-year-old starting to show distinct signs of deterioration? And for now, the Blues have nobody to replace the outgoing Rudiger or Christiansen.

Yes, Chelsea has promising young central defenders in Malang Sarr and Trevor Chalobah, but neither player is ready to consistently marshal an elite rearguard.

The Prospect of Joining Conte’s Revolution

Bremer can also be swayed at the thought of joining Antonio Conte’s revolution at Spurs. He can be a part of an exciting project that promises forthcoming opportunities to win at a club that hasn’t triumphed in years.

Being a part of that potentially epic journey has its own allure. He would fit seamlessly into the rearguard and, quite possibly, be an instrumental member of Tottenham’s backline for years to come.

Bremer also knows Emerson Royal from the Brazil camp and might want to fortify a relationship with his compatriot at the club level.

Even with those things taken into consideration, Chelsea are still seen as the favourites to land Bremer, but hopefully Conte and Paratici can convince Bremer to believe in what the future has to offer at Spurs.
