Tottenham Hotspur was active before the transfer window opened and has continued that activity with a defender deal on day one, continuing the squad transformation.

No, it was not the deal for a defender most Spurs fans wanted; we will continue to wait and hope for Alessandro Bastoni patiently. However, Tottenham Hotspur made an essential move on the first day of the transfer window, moving long-time loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers on a permanent switch to Celtic.

Carter-Vickers spent a long time at Tottenham, mostly on loan

First joining Spurs academy at just 16, Carter-Vickers has been part of the Tottenham Hotspur for nearly eight years. However, during that time, the American defender has been on more loans away from the club – seven – than he had appearances for the senior team – five. On the cusp of the squad each pre-season, more experienced and talented defenders have kept the rugged centre-back from breaking through at Spurs.

Two seasons ago, after a successful loan at Bournemouth in the Championship, it looked like Carter-Vickers might finally get his chance – with Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld gone from the club – however, the signing of Cristian Romero left Carter-Vickers surplus to requirements. Not getting his opportunity at N17 has finally paid off, with Carter-Vickers moving permanently to Scotland.

Carter-Vickers did not join until after the season had started and carried a bit of an ankle injury, but still found his home with the Scottish Champions. After joining Celtic, Carter-Vickers started 33 of 34 league matches for the Hoops.

A big-bodied defender, Carter-Vickers was not an excellent match for the pace of the English Premier League. Still, his toughness and tactical abilities suit the Scottish Premiership very well. Scoring four goals, adding an assist, and performing consistently as a defender make Carter-Vickers a must-have for the Bhoys.

After eight years and seven loans, this was undoubtedly the right move for Carter-Vickers, and considering Spurs received £ 6.1 million ($7.7m) for the defender, according to transfermarkt.com, it was indeed a good bit of business for the north London club. As an American, it is disappointing that Carter-Vickers never caught on with Spurs, but as a fan of the Lilywhites, this is a needed move that opens money and space in the team. If Fabio Paratici and Antonio Conte can only get that defender we all want, things will be great in north London.
