Tottenham on verge of signing Inter Milan star as Conte wastes no time
By Gary Pearson
Tottenham and Ivan Perisic are set to agree terms to bring the Inter Milan star to north London in what would be a reunion with former manager Antonio Conte.
This is huge news for a Tottenham team that usually waits until the last minute of the transfer window to secure any new additions.
If the reports from the Independent are anything to go by, Perisic is set to snub Chelsea to reunite with Conte.
Conte is confident the 33-year-old still has a few solid years left at the top level. The Croatian was an instrumental part of Inter’s Scudetto when Conte was pulling the strings at the Italian club.
With a wealth of experience and the ability to play confidently down the left wing, Perisic is a perfect player to help Tottenham win immediately. He is not a player for the future, an obvious assertion based on his age and compounding wear and tear.
But he can help Spurs win next season, Conte’s only priority at this stage. Perisic will earn about £4 million per season over a two-year contract. Confirmation of the prospective deal is expected to come on Monday.
While the deal is not yet confirmed, there is ample evidence to suggest it will be by early next week, marking a new era for Tottenham’s transfer negotiations. It’s about three months earlier than Tottenham supporters expect new additions to arrive, if any arrive at all.
The £150 million injection of cash is going to be used swiftly and intelligently by Conte and Fabio Paratici, who know the club is on the cusp of achieving something it hasn’t over a decade if they pull the correct transfer strings.
With the Champions League beckoning, this signing makes perfect sense. Perisic is a seasoned veteran who has more Champions League experience than the entire Spurs roster combined. He knows how to deal with pressure and get the job done on any stage, which he’s shown time and again throughout his illustrious career.
And most importantly, he has an excellent left foot, precisely what the doctor ordered on Hotspur Way.
