Exciting Development in Tottenham’s Pursuit of Italian Defender
By Gary Pearson
Tottenham’s pursuit of defender Alessandro Bastoni just received a boost with news that Inter Milan has a possible replacement lined up for their 23-year-old Italian.
Antonio Conte highly touts Bastoni and has made clear his interest in signing the left-footed defender.
While Ben Davies enjoyed one of his best seasons in a Tottenham shirt, particularly at the business end, Conte has always reinforced the necessity of having two elite players battling at each position.
Bastoni would offer Davies stiff competition and, if he adapted well to the rigours of the top flight, would probably unseat the Welshman as Spurs’ first-choice left-sided centre back. That’s a thought for the future though, as a number of variables and complexities stand in Tottenham’s way.
One such potential impediment might be clearing like the weather in the aftermath of a tropical storm, as Inter, according to Football.london, are targeting Gleison Bremer as Bastoni’s possible replacement.
Inter would need to sell Bastoni to garner the funds needed to purchase Bremer, leaving the door agape for Spurs.
According to Transfermarkt.com, Bastoni is worth €60 million on the open market, exactly what Inter is reportedly asking for him.
Like any rumour at this time of year, a lot has to happen before it materializes into anything beyond conjecture.
But this one is worth keeping tabs on, as both Bastoni and Conte hold each other in high esteem and are motivated to get a deal across the line.
Bastoni referred to Conte as the “Messi of coaches”, high praise for Spurs’ gaffer. And Conte rates Bastoni highly, understanding acutely the importance of bringing in a Davies’ alternative.
He’s already working on a more advanced left-footed Inter option, so the Bastoni rumours have more initial credence than most.
