Why do Tottenham need to resign Christian Eriksen?

Off the back of 5-1 and 4-0 victories over Newcastle and Aston Villa, things finally looked to be coming together for Tottenham under Antonio Conte, with a front three of Kane, Son, and Kulusevski seemingly able to score at will. However, unfortunately, that’s clearly not the case.

Admittedly, nostalgia has a hand in this, as after everything he’s been through, seeing him return to N17 would be a spectacle. Eriksen has shown his class in his short stint at Brentford, looking precisely the kind of player Spurs are crying out for.

Eriksen hit the ground running at Brentford, as before the Dane broke into the team, Thomas Frank’s side had just three victories in their past twenty league matches. Since his full debut against Norwich, the Bees have won five from seven, drawing the other to Spurs and losing just once to Leicester, where coincidently, he was absent from the squad altogether.

Being deployed on the left of a three-man midfield, Eriksen is afforded time in the middle of the park, allowing him to pick up the ball deeper, then drive at defenders before releasing a pass or trademark longshot. His one goal and two assists are nothing to wax lyrical about; his impact on the team is unquestionable, evidenced by the drastic upturn in form since entering the side.

With Conte favouring the 3-4-3 at Spurs, Eriksen may not be a starter, however, having a deep-lying attack-minded midfielder to come on would represent a much-needed weapon in Tottenham’s arsenal. Throughout various games this season, most recently against Brentford and Brighton, Spurs have looked starved of creativity and too often rely on Kane and Son to create chances out of nothing.

With Eriksen out of contract in the summer, Spurs look to have a real shot at landing his signature, as although he departed in somewhat fractious circumstances is believed to want to remain in London.

Whatever happens, after all, he’s been through, to see Eriksen grace the Premier League again with such quality is a truly wonderful sight. While a return to Spurs is fuelled mainly by nostalgia, at face value, the two look as if they would compliment each other perfectly.

All Spurs fans, particularly myself, would surely love to see Eriksen back in the white of Tottenham in what would mark a fitting homecoming for one of football’s modern-day greats.
