Surgery a frustrating end to Spurs season for Oliver Skipp

After a tremendous start to his senior Spurs career, Oliver Skipp‘s Tottenham Hotspur season came to a quiet end on Tuesday following surgery.

Having played in 27 of Spurs’ 33 matches to that point, Oliver Skipp had established himself as an integral part of the Tottenham team. Skipp was only supposed to be out a few days after aggravating a knock he initially picked up with England’s youth set-up. Now more than three months later is season is over without making another appearance. It was ultimately a disappointing end to a breakout season, for the Spurs academy graduate.

Skipp established himself with Tottenham

Skipp played all but one match last season on loan with Norwich in the Championship. After breaking his leg in the next to last match of the season, Skipp missed matchday 46 as Norwich was promoted to the Premier League.

Skipp was a monster for Norwich, playing nearly 3,900 minutes across some 47 appearances. His goal and assist statistics were minimal – one and two – but his influence at the base of the Canary midfield allowed Emilian Buendia and others to push forward and buoy the Norwich attack.

It was unclear the role Skipp would play coming into the season, however, from the beginning, the young midfielder made it obvious the team was better with him in the lineup than without him.

The energy and industry that Skipp brings to the team is something no other midfielder in the squad can replicate. Whether it is pressing in the attacking third from the middle of the pitch or making the professional foul in the middle of the park, Skipp was a rock in the midfield for Spurs.

Throughout the season, Skipp grew his eye for a forward pass and his willingness to go forward. Skipp’s value to the team was evident in the club dropping three of the first four matches he missed.

Now, days after signing a new contract running until 2027, Skipp’s season quietly ended following surgery for his lingering pubis issue. With his season officially over, we can appreciate the run Skipp made for Tottenham Hotspur in his first official Spurs senior season. Tottenham is going to miss Skipp over the last month of the season but Spurs fans should feel good about the future of this midfield dynamo.
