Tottenham luckily still in control of their own destiny after Arsenal loss

Tottenham Hotspur are still in control, somewhat miraculously, of their own destiny after Arsenal’s 1-0 loss away to Southampton. 

It feels like a game of top-four roulette, such is each side’s inability to take the bull by its horns.

Thankfully, Spurs flat outing at home against Brighton hasn’t cost them as dearly as it probably should have.

The Gunners lost their third in a row, this time at Southampton, thanks to Fraser Forster’s heroics. Manchester United were bailed out by another Cristiano Ronaldo hat trick, this time against Norwich in an unconvincing home performance.

After all that, Tottenham are still slight favourites to secure a top four place, but don’t try convince Antonio Conte of that. He’ll be fuming at his side’s inability to put in a solid performance when it mattered most, but, at least internally, will be grateful about United and Arsenal’s inconsistencies.

Tottenham has the most favourable remaining schedule and will hope today’s dud was an anomaly. They’ll expect to get back to winning ways when they make the short trip to Brentford on Saturday.

The Bees triumphed over Watford today for their third successive victory, making Tottenham’s visit even more challenging. Nobody should trick themselves into thinking the match against Brentford is going to be an easy one.

Brentford is playing with as much confidence as they have all season after beating West Ham and Chelsea prior to today’s away victory.

United travel to Anfield, where Spurs still have to go, for a match on Tuesday and Arsenal venture to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Hopefully both teams will suffer defeat in their respective matches, leaving Tottenham with yet another chance to distance themselves from the chasing pack.
