In the blink of an eye, Tottenham’s Son Heung-min has entered the Golden Boot conversation, with the South Korean just three behind Mo Salah with seven matches to play.

Sonny, who has six in the last three top flight matches, is scoring at a sensationally prolific rate. He has appeared from the shadows to close the gap atop the goalscoring chart, leapfrogging a number of players, including teammate Harry Kane, who has taken the role of primary playmaker instead.

Salah leads the way with 20 goals. The Liverpool striker, who was pipped for last season’s Golden Boot on the final day by Kane, hasn’t scored in his last three.

Looking back further, Sonny has scored eight goals in his last seven, going on a run that puts him in serious contention to repeat what Kane did to Salah last season.

The current leader has four goals in his last seven, so if both continue on their current pace they’ll end the season level on 24 goals. Wouldn’t that be something.

Sonny has a current XG of 12.02, while Salah is sitting at an XG of 21.65. The Tottenham attacking midfielder is entirely more proficient, scoring at a higher rate than what his opportunities suggest.

Salah is supposed to have between 21 and 22 goals and isn’t far below his overall XG.

Both teams have everything to play for in the run-in, one searching for a top four spot, the other trying to win the league.

Liverpool host Tottenham on Saturday, May 7. We’ll know a lot more about Sonny’s chances for that grand occasion, as Spurs will only have three matches remaining after the Anfield test.

Liverpool play United at home on Tuesday, but have a relatively easy schedule otherwise.

The only thing better than securing fourth spot in the Premier League would be claiming the Champions League berth and seeing Sonny win his first Golden Boot.
