Most but not all Tottenham Hotspur players have a good international day
By Aaron Coe
With World Cup lives on the line for some and placement for others, most Tottenham Hotspur international players had a good Thursday, but not all.
On Thursday, Tottenham Hotspur had a slew of players playing for their respective countries, as seven senior players and two academy players took the field in international play. The results were positive for most of the players, but at least one player felt some real heartache as the World Cup creeps nearer. Here is a quick rundown of Tottenham players and their results.
Tottenham players in international action
In undoubtedly one of the most pivotal matches, Wales advanced past Austria 2-1 behind the strength of a Gareth Bale brace. And while Bale does not currently play for Tottenham, Ben Davies and Joe Rodon do, and both went a full 90 minutes for the Dragons. That big win, where Davies had an assist on Bale’s second goal, pushes Wales into the finals of a qualifying playoff round to be played later this summer.
While Davies and Rodon took a big step toward World Cup qualification, Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur and his Uruguay teammates booked their passage to Qatar with a 1-0 win over Peru. Guaranteed to finish no worse than fourth, Uruguay has snatched one of the automatic bids from the CONMEBOL region.
Like Davies and Rodon, Dejan Kulusevski and Sweden had a joyous day on Thursday, topping the Czech Republic 1-0 in their semi-final, qualifying match. Earlier in the day, Heung-min Son and South Korea beat Iran 2-0, with Sonny scoring his nation’s first. South Korea is playing for better seeding and placement in the tournament, and the win helps that.
It was not all good news for Spurs players, although he and Colombia won 3-0, Davinson Sanchez and his teammates know they will have to wing a playoff to qualify from CONMEBOL.
Both Tottenham academy players had tough days as well. Kallum Cesay and Sierra Leon lost in a friendly 3-0, while Maksim Paskotsi and Estonia drew 0-0 with Cyprus in a UEFA Nations League game.
The worst day of all belonged to Pierluigi Gollini. Fortunately for Gollini, he was not officially in the matchday squad; unfortunately for Italy, their injury-time goal to North Macedonia means Italy will again miss the World Cup. Not even one entire summer removed from winning EURO 2020, Italy again misses out, and Gollini has our sympathies.
